چکیده

We analyze an array of linearly extended monodomain dipoles forming square and kagome lattices. We find that its phase diagram contains two distinct finite-entropy kagome ice regimes—one disordered, one algebraic—as well as a low-temperature ordered phase. In the limit of the islands almost touching, we find a staircase of corresponding entropy plateaux, which is analytically captured by a theory based on magnetic charges. For the case of a modified square ice array, we show that the charges “monopoles” are excitations experiencing two distinct Coulomb interactions: a magnetic “three-dimensional” one as well as a logarithmic “two-dimensional” one of entropic origin.

Fragmentation of magnetism in artificial kagome dipolar spin ice

Geometrical frustration in magnetic materials often gives rise to exotic, low-temperature states of matter, such as the ones observed in spin ices. Here we report the imaging of the magnetic states of a thermally active artificial magnetic ice that reveal the fingerprints of a spin fragmentation process. This fragmentation corresponds to a splitting of the magnetic degree of freedom into two ch...

Direct observation of the ice rule in an artificial kagome spin ice

Recently, significant interest has emerged in fabricated systems that mimic the behavior of geometrically frustrated materials. We present the full realization of such an artificial spin ice system on a two-dimensional kagome lattice and we demonstrate rigid adherence to the local ice rule by directly counting individual pseudospins. The resulting spin configurations show not only local ice rul...

Low temperature and high field regimes of connected kagome artificial spin ice: the role of domain wall topology

Artificial spin ices are frustrated magnetic nanostructures where single domain nanobars act as macrosized spins. In connected kagome artificial spin ice arrays, reversal occurs along one-dimensional chains by propagation of ferromagnetic domain walls through Y-shaped vertices. Both the vertices and the walls are complex chiral objects with well-defined topological edge-charges. At room tempera...

Perpendicular magnetization and generic realization of the Ising model in artificial spin ice.

We have studied frustrated kagome arrays and unfrustrated honeycomb arrays of magnetostatically interacting single-domain ferromagnetic islands with magnetization normal to the plane. The measured pairwise spin correlations of both lattices can be reproduced by models based solely on nearest-neighbor correlations. The kagome array has qualitatively different magnetostatics but identical lattice...
